December 12, 2009 – Luminaria Night

2,501 households participated in the Luminaria Night 2008. Students from local middle schools, high schools, and Lehigh University, scouts of various ages, neighborhood leaders, and many volunteers assembled and distributed 5,924 kits. That means that 59,240 candles, each in a sand-weighted bag, burning with neighborly kindness, illuminated Bethlehem, and the lives of homeless families and mentally disabled adults. Executive Director, Rev. Bill Kuntze, saw it all from the sky in a small airplane. Income from the event totaled about $54,000 to support the work of New Bethany Ministries.

A large grass roots network makes this wonderful event possible each year. It includes a leadership committee, regional captains, block captains, kit assembly volunteers, Wal-Mart of Bethlehem, the City of Bethlehem Parks and Recreation Department, Northampton County Community College, and thousands of cooperative neighbors, all led by Debbie Delgrosso.

Luminaria 2009 will be on Saturday, December 12. Our goal is 72,000 candles at 3,000 households. If you want to
have an active part in this wonderful event, please let us know. The committee begins its work in June.
