12/13/2019 UPDATE: If you are looking at weather, you will see rain anticipated through Saturday afternoon. The Luminiaria Night event committee will make a final determination by 2pm Saturday, on whether to postpone the event. Please watch this space, or social media for updates.
12/10/2019 UPDATE: Kits are still available! Purchase them at the New Bethany office weekdays 8:30-4:30 and Saturday 12/14 10am-1pm. Also purchase them at Downtown Bethlehem welcome center (Gundie House) daily from 10am-8pm.
Luminaria Night is a beautiful and enchanted evening when neighborhoods line their streets with luminaria – white bags illuminated by votive candles. The luminaries are a symbol of unity and caring for those less fortunate. Luminaria Night started in 1998 in a small neighborhood in Bethlehem to benefit one family in need. Now in its 22nd year, Luminaria Night has grown into a valley-wide event bringing neighbors together in a beautiful evening of light and giving. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of Luminaria kits go to New Bethany Ministries, benefiting thousands of individuals and families in need. In 2018 alone the event raised more than $100,000 and lit up more than 4,200 homes to help neighbors in need.

A Brief History of Luminaria Night
Luminaria Night started twenty-two years ago in the neighborhood west of Linden Street and north of Johnston Drive. Three neighbors wanted to recreate the tradition of connecting homes with the light of candles in bags at the holiday season. In order to determine an interest in participating, they sent out an informational letter to about sixty homes, explaining the nature of the event and the cost of luminaria kits. Through the sale of kits, they raised $300 that first year, all of which was donated to a family in need. In the early years of the event, several different charities benefited from Luminaria Night. Among them was New Bethany Ministries, which provides meals, financial services, and housing to poor, hungry, homeless and mentally ill individuals and families in the Lehigh Valley. Because the founders of the event were so impressed with the outreach of New Bethany, they decided to affiliate themselves permanently in 2003. Since then, Luminaria Night has added many new neighborhoods, block captains, and regional captains each year. In 2018, we lit 4,200 homes and businesses, raising over $100,000 for New Bethany Ministries. From a desire to connect with neighbors and light up a small neighborhood at the holidays, Luminaria Night has grown to a valley-wide collaboration illuminating many neighborhoods in a beautiful evening of light and giving.
